本期导读(No.105)

www.eduweekly.com.au

Introduction
On the previous issue, an article “Love your children, love overseas Chinese students” was published which has raised concern about in what way Chinese parents love their own children. On this issue, we would like to propose a discussion about “Whether it is worthwhile to raise children overseas in Chinese parenting style”. For most Chinese parents, the answer may be “No”. However, many may be raising their own children in the Chinese style, with and without attention.

If the Chinese parenting does not work in Australia, then the Australian parenting does worse. The parental neglect has placed heavy burden on school and Ms Gillard has to promise that more support will be provided to help schools in tackling violence, bullying and behavioral problems of students.

Then let’s see the relation among schools, teachers and students. VICTORIA will become the first state to link teachers' wages to their students' test results, which means whether teachers will get bonus or promotion will be partly dependent on the performance of their students in the national literacy and numeracy test. Teachers therefore have to suspect the validity and reliability of this national standardized test. However, one thing is for sure, more schools and teachers will be involved into this national exam.

Do you agree that “the ancient way is sometimes the best way”? It makes sense apparently, otherwise why it can survive for so long? The “ancient way” we are talking about here is reciting and transcribing, which might bring more opponents asking whether it is necessary to encourage children to recite and transcribe in this Internet age? You may find the answer by yourself on this issue.

Newly designed pages by Shanghai Parenting Times are presented on this issue among which the stories about “How a young girl pursue her dream in music” and “How to help slow children at homework” are both worth reading. We would like again to appreciate the contribution of the editorial office of Shanghai Parenting Times.

Many readers may find “Real Estate Guide” the must-read column of this journal. The author of the column is a senior real estate agent and consultant. Every other week, he sends his English article to our editorial office where his work is then translated into Chinese to meet readers. This column is posted on the website of this journal www.eduweekly.com.au as well and please feel free to go through his works on previous issues.

This is the second last issue of 2009. On the last issue, we will make public the VCE Chinese results of 2009, the awards of Excellent Chinese Teachers and Excellent Students by Xin Jin Shan Education Fund, and names of students who have performed well in 2009 in Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School. Anyway, there are many good news coming soon.
